Behind the Curtain at DCR – Business System Analyst

What’s it like to work at an innovative company like DCR? In this monthly blog series, we let you peek behind the curtain into our organization to see what makes us tick – our culture, our core roles and the people behind them. We’d like you to meet Sonali Kshirsagar, our Business System Analyst and Scrum Master. She’s been with DCR since 2011, and has made an enormous impact on Smart Track technology as she was instrumental in developing our incredible Statement of Work (SOW) solution.

Hi Sonali! Can you tell us what your roles as Business System Analyst and Scrum Master require and what you like most about them?

At DCR, many of us wear a variety of hats, which makes work interesting and allows us to see different facets of the business. As Business System Analyst, I’m the primary liaison between the Operations, Implementation and Business Teams and the Technology Team, so I get to work with many teams. I work with a group on the technical side to add innovative features to Smart Track such as our Statement of Work solution. I get the requirements from our internal teams or our clients and create user stories, and then I work with IT to build a solution for our clients using Scrum.

Basically, Scrum is an incremental agile software development framework for managing complex software projects. The team works on a specific set of features, focusing on a specific business need, over a short period of time, called sprints. Then as Scrum Master, I facilitate the sprint planning as well as host daily Scrum and retrospective meetings which inspects the sprint for what went well and what needs to be improved. I also remove any impediments blocking my team from moving forward such as providing them with clarification or extra assistance.

So all of my roles are interrelated. The best part is that I work in a challenging, fast-paced environment where I have to juggle my roles while working with many departments and the Executive Team. Because we work so closely, we can make suggestions, turn them into strategic decisions and implement them quickly.

That must be demanding! So if someone wanted to work in your department, what advice would you give him or her?

You have to be dedicated and process-oriented as well as have the ability to consider all of the implications one change can make across the entire spectrum of clients – all with varying needs. It’s really important to realize that one alteration in one place can be like dominoes affecting numerous other components, so you have to play out the cause-and-effect scenario throughout our entire infrastructure, and work out a solution accordingly. Additionally, you have to be willing to work with many different teams, so of course you need the technical knowledge, but you also need the business sensibility to think ahead – what may be a great enhancement for Smart Track today must also work in the future.

That’s a lot to keep track of! What’s your favorite aspect about working at DCR?

I really like the fact that I can reach out to anyone at any time, including the executives, and they’ll get back to me right away, which helps me do my job efficiently. Also, I love the people I work with. We work hard, but we also have fun. We’re very close. We play ping pong. We go to lunch together. We have parties to celebrate everything from birthdays to baby showers to holidays.

DCR is like family to me. For example, they arranged a surprise baby shower for me.  And after I had my baby, they let me work flexible hours as well as work from home.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about DCR?

Smart Track is always evolving. When I started working here, we had the old version of Smart Track. The new version is so much more powerful and has so many enhancements. It’s always amazing to see our enhancements, such as the Statement of Work, and how it helps our clients.

Our user interface is continually changing kind of like a cell phone – we’re always making improvements. For example, our analytics are now prescriptive, which means that Smart Track can actually tell our clients who is the best candidate to choose for a certain requisition with pinpoint accuracy and no human bias. Our technology is incredible, and I’m proud to be a part of the team that makes it happen.

One last question. What’s your favorite perk at DCR?

As a working mom, I’m so thankful for both the house cleaning and car washes that DCR pays for regularly. I honestly don’t know how I would get everything done at home without these services. They allow me to spend more time with my family, which is so important to me.

Sonali, it’s been a pleasure talking with you and learning about all of the many roles you play at DCR!
